Firefighters waged a difficult firefight Sunday at an auto salvage yard in the San Fernando Valley community of Pacoima.
The fire was reported at 5:39 p.m. Sunday among several vehicles in the salvage yard at 12275 W. Branford St., near San Fernando Road, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Jennifer Middleton. The flames were out at 6:46 p.m.
Thick, black smoke could be seen on news video billowing from under tin carport roofs over multiple burning vehicles.
More than 100 firefighters took up defensive positions, Middleton said. They used heavy streams and ladder pipe operations from around the salvage yard until they were finally able to spray the vehicle under the carport roofs.
Hazardous materials units monitored air quality and water runoff and firefighters were mindful of the increased smoke toxicity if electric vehicles had caught fire, she said.
With the fire out, many firefighters were assigned to make sure all hot spots were out, Middleton said.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was not immediately known.
