A 37-year-old Santa Ana man accused of a violent domestic attack earlier this year appeared in court Tuesday following his arrest after an hourslong standoff with police at a motel.

Joseph Angel Palacios is charged with attempted murder, aggravated mayhem, burglary, and corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant with sentencing enhancements for attempted premeditated murder, personal use of a deadly weapon, and inflicting great bodily injury on the victim.

Police allege Palacios assaulted a woman during a domestic violence incident on Jan. 2.

On Sunday morning, officers tracked Palacios down at a Motel 6 at 1501 N. Harbor Blvd., police said. When officers attempted to talk to him, he barricaded himself inside his room and refused to surrender, police said.

Palacios, who was in the room with a woman, spoke with SWAT officers for eight hours before surrendering, police said.

Palacios did not enter a plea at his arraignment, which was rescheduled for May 19 in the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.
