Police Monday released details about a shooting by offices of a knife-wielding suspect in Boyle Heights.

Officers were called at about 1:45 a.m. Saturday to an apartment at 3056 Glenn Ave., where a suspect was reported to have a large knife, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman told City News Service.

When officers arrived, they were met by a family member of the suspect, according to an official LAPD statement.

“While officers were conducting their investigation, the suspect, later identified as 40-year-old Robert Velasquez, emerged from the residence with two knives and a grilling fork,” according to the LAPD. “The officers gave verbal commands to Velasquez to drop the weapons, but he did not comply.”

Police say Velasquez threw one knife in the officers’ direction, at which time at least one officer opened fire. Velasquez went down, then attempted to get up, still holding the knife and fork and was shot again, according to the LAPD.

“Velasquez was struck by gunfire, collapsed onto the ground, but refused to submit to arrest,” police said.

The wounded suspect then sat up and moved toward the front door of the home. The officers deployed a 40 mm foam round to stop Velasquez, and he was taken into custody, police said.

Officers rendered aid until paramedics arrived and took Velasquez to a hospital, police said.

No officers or civilians were injured.

Two knives and a grilling fork were recovered at the scene and booked as evidence, police said.

The shooting investigation was being handled by the LAPD’s Force Investigation Division.
