A teenager suspected of fatally shooting a man and wounding another man during a gang-related attack outside a Banning convenience store was behind bars Monday, along with a second teen who allegedly aided his escape.
The first youth, whose identity was not disclosed due to his age, was arrested without incident Thursday and booked into Riverside Juvenile Hall on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and gang activity. His alleged accomplice, also a minor, was booked into the detention facility at the same time on suspicion of being an accessory after the fact.
The first teen is accused of gunning down 21-year-old Donald Ray Miles III in April 2025, in front of Jack’s Market on North Eighth Street, near Ramsey Street, according to the Banning Police Department.
Capt. Brandon Smith said that, following a yearlong investigation that involved forensics experts from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, detectives were able to identify the alleged shooter and the boy who allegedly helped him get away after the alleged attack.
Smith said Miles and another man, whose identity was not released, were leaving or going into the market shortly before 7 p.m. on April 14, 2025, when the armed teen confronted them.
The only details about the confrontation indicated it was gang-related.
Miles was shot multiple times, while the other victim was also hit. The shooter fled the location.
Smith said witnesses called 911, and patrol officers and medical personnel reached the store minutes later. Miles was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim, seriously wounded, was taken to a regional trauma center and underwent surgery, ultimately recovering.
Smith did not disclose what evidence confirmed the identity of the alleged gunman.
