An inmate was captured after he tried to flee from the entrance area of a downtown Los Angeles jail following a bus ride from the Inglewood Courthouse, authorities said Wednesday.
The inmate’s break for freedom occurred at about 5:50 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Court Services Transportation Bureau.
Bureau personnel had returned from Inglewood court and escorted six inmates from a transport bus to the entrance of the Inmate Reception Center at 450 Bauchet St., according to a bureau statement.
” While awaiting entry into (the) IRC, a 32-year-old inmate suddenly fled from the entrance area and ran southwest through the IRC bus compound,” the statement explained. “Deputies immediately pursued the inmate but briefly lost visual contact. An observant on-duty CST watch commander then spotted the inmate climbing a wall in the southwest area of the compound and promptly broadcast emergency radio traffic.”
Within 30 seconds, a sheriff’s department helicopter swooped in and helped coordinate efforts between the sheriff’s Aero Bureau and the Los Angeles Police Department, and the errant inmate was taken into custody at 6:08 p.m. Tuesday.
The nature of the charges against the inmate was not immediately clear.
