A wildfire that broke out Friday along Highway 74 at the western boundary of the San Bernardino National Forest charred about four acres as crews and Cal Fire aircraft converged on the location.

The non-injury blaze was reported at 12:03 p.m. Friday a short distance from a U.S. Forest Service fire station just east of Valle Vista, on the south side of the highway, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency said that multiple engine and hand crews from the county and USFS were sent to the location, encountering flames moving at slow rate into a dry wash, with one or two spot fires ahead of the main blaze.

No homes or other structures were immediately threatened.

Two Cal Fire air tankers from nearby Hemet-Ryan Airport reached the site within a few minutes and initiated runs on the brush fire that slowed its advance, enabling firefighters to begin establishing tentative containment lines.

No evacuation orders were imminent, and the highway remained open for travel.

The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known.
