After a two hour battle, firefighters Monday have knocked down a blaze at a two-story church in the Broadway-Manchester community of South Los Angeles, authorities said.
Firefighters were dispatched at 5:10 a.m. to the 10800 block of South Broadway Street, and fire was coming from the second floor when they arrived, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported.
“Over 60 firefighters will continue in an extended operation and continue to fight the fire defensively with large diameter hose lines and ladder pipe operations,” Jennifer Middleton of the Los Angeles Fire Department, said initially. “LAFD heavy equipment is en route to assist with extinguishment and overhaul operations.”
But once fire crews felt confident they had the fire under control, LAFD launched the next phase of their operations. A knockdown time was announced around 7:16 a.m., said Middleton.
“The heavily damaged structure is currently undergoing assessment from LADBS (Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety) to ensure viability and structural integrity,” said Middleton. “Many LAFD companies will remain on scene for a thorough overhaul once LAFD Arson completes their investigation per protocol.”
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
