A 76-year-old man was killed and another person was injured in a vehicle crash allegedly triggered by a wrong-way driver on the Harbor (110) Freeway in South Los Angeles, authorities said Monday.
The crash occurred at about 10:15 a.m. Sunday on the southbound freeway at south of Vernon Avenue, the California Highway Patrol reported.
A few minutes earlier, the CHP had received a call of a vehicle being driven northbound in southbound lanes, according to a CHP statement. That was followed by a report of a head-on collision.
Preliminary information revealed the driver of a silver Honda Civic was the wrong way motorist who crashed into a gray Nissan Murano. The driver of the Honda Civic was killed in the crash, the CHP said.
He was later identified as Edmund Davis, the Medical Examiner’s office said.
Paramedics rushed another person to a hospital, the CHP said. That person’s condition was not known.
It was also unknown whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash but the investigation continued, the CHP said.
All traffic was diverted off the southbound freeway at Vernon Avenue at 10:24 a.m. A SigAlert was issued at 10:53 a.m. closing all southbound lanes just south of Vernon Avenue for the investigation.
