A 20-year-old woman who was killed when a bullet was fired through a bedroom window, striking her while she slept, was identified Wednesday.
Officers responded at approximately 3:30 a.m. Sunday to the 400 block of West 103rd Street, near Grand Avenue, in South Los Angeles to reports of shots fired, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Details about what led up to the fatal shooting remain limited. Police said Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics arrived at the location, where they pronounced the woman dead at the scene.
She was identified Wednesday by the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office as Maria Barrios Ventura, who sustained a gunshot wound to the head.
No suspect description has been released and no arrests have been reported in connection with the shooting.
A GoFundMe campaign for the victim’s family had raised more than $5,700 as of Wednesday.
“This sudden and heartbreaking event has left her family devastated and struggling to cope with the loss,” the organizer said in a statement, adding that Ventura was a mother to a 1-year-old daughter, who now has an “uncertain future without her mother,” and that Ventura’s death has been felt deeply by everyone who knew her.
