Authorities Friday were investigating a head-on collision that killed one person and left four others injured near Desert Hot Springs.
The collision was reported at 12:45 p.m. Thursday on Mountain View Road, north of Clubhouse Drive, in the unincorporated community of Garnet, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The agency stated that a vehicle traveling at an unspecified rate of speed veered into the southbound lanes and collided with another vehicle traveling in the southbound lane.
A vehicle had one occupant, who sustained major injuries, while the second vehicle contained four occupants. Three juveniles suffered minor to moderate injuries and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP stated.
Both vehicles caught on fire, but was extinguished following the arrival of the Riverside County Fire Department.
The identity of the deceased individual was not revealed.
Mountain View Road was temporarily closed.
