A 45-year-old man suspected of fatally shooting a 48-year-old woman in Long Beach has been taken into custody, police announced Wednesday.

Officers were sent to the 1400 block of Redondo Avenue around 3 a.m. Tuesday regarding a death investigation, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

They located a woman who sustained a gunshot wound, prompting the response of Long Beach Fire Department personnel, who pronounced the woman dead at the scene. She was later identified as Suzette Aparijo of Hawaiian Gardens.

Homicide detectives arrived at the location and determined Juan Antonio Cruz of Long Beach was the suspected shooter following an investigation, police said.

Cruz was arrested and booked at the Long Beach City Jail on suspicion of murder. He was being held on $2 million bail.

Detectives concluded during their investigation that Cruz and Aparijo were in a dating relationship, but the motive behind the shooting remains under investigation.

Police said the case is expected to be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for formal filing consideration.
