Federal agents raided a home in the Westmont area near South Los Angeles Wednesday as part of an investigation into fraud tied to aid for the homeless.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli was on hand as agents led a handcuffed woman out of a home early Wednesday.
The arrest was among others that Essayli’s office planned to address in a news conference later Wednesday where criminal charges would be announced.
“Senior federal law enforcement officials will announce new arrests and criminal charges involving misuse and theft of taxpayer money intended to combat the homelessness crisis,” according to a news release from Essayli’s office.
Also expected to attend the news conference along with Essayli were Assistant U.S. Attorney General for the National Fraud Enforcement Division Colin McDonald; U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secreatary Scott Turner; Acting Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office Robert Molvar; Special Agent in Charge of IRS Criminal Investigations Los Angeles Field Office Darren Lian; Deputy Assistant Inspector General for Investigations, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Office of Inspector General Robert Lawler; and Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman.
