Two people were killed in a deputy-involved shooting at a Bellflower residence Sunday.

Deputies from the Lakewood sheriff’s station responded about 1 p.m. Sunday to the 9500 block of Maplewood Street, east of Lakewood Boulevard, to assist the Los Angeles County Fire Department, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

They found a woman in her 80s unresponsive and experiencing a medical emergency, according to the department. They entered the residence to render aid and search for additional victims. While inside, they encountered a man in his early 50s who produced a handgun, prompting a deputy-involved shooting. No deputies were injured.

Fire department personnel pronounced the woman and the man dead at the scene.

Investigators determined the two knew each other and described the incident as isolated, and not a random act of violence. No further details about their relationship were immediately released. The investigation remained ongoing.

Anyone with information regarding the incident was urged to contact the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477).
