Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Ramon Cortines on Tuesday announced the hiring of an information-technology director to oversee a department that has been struggling to recover from problems with a computerized student-information system.
Shahryar Khazei has been with the LAUSD for more than 30 years, serving most recently as deputy chief information officer in charge of infrastructure and systems support, according to the district.
“Mr. Khazei has extensive experience working with the district and in our IT Division,” Cortines said. “I am confident he will move us forward as we continue to make strides in our efforts to recover the My Integrated Student Information System, and he has the experience we seek to provide leadership for our students and employees.”
The MiSiS program was plagued with troubles since its rollout last year, resulting in some students unable to get classes they need, others repeating classes and some students who were nearing graduation and applying for colleges unable to obtain academic transcripts.
In October, Cortines announced an overhaul of the Information Technology Division, starting with the resignation of Chief Information Officer Ron Chandler.
He also terminated the contract of a consultant, Bria Jones, who had been working on the MiSiS system and created a “program manager” position to coordinate all of the district’s work on the MiSiS issue.
