An 11th-grader hoping to miss a class at Saugus High School Friday made an allegation that another student had a firearm on campus, but an investigation quickly revealed the truth and the youngster was arrested, a sheriff’s sergeant said.

The false allegation surfaced about 10:30 a.m. at the school at 21900 Centurion Way, according to Sgt. David Shoemaker of the Santa Clarita sheriff’s station.

The sergeant said he wasn’t immediately certain if the student’s claim was made on social media, but it quickly went viral, causing a large law enforcement response and the temporary lockdown of the campus.

It took investigators about 30 minutes to get to the bottom of what happened and the student, whose name was withheld, was taken into custody, Shoemaker said.

“The school resource deputy jumped on this really quick,” he said.
