Sen. Jeff Stone, R-Temecula, Tuesday announced the start of his annual “There Ought to be a Law” contest, seeking recommendations from Riverside County students on what laws they would like to see enacted or changed.
“By asking our high school students to propose new laws, I am hoping to tap into their bright, inquisitive minds and also to inspire them to get involved in politics and public service,” Stone said. “I am looking for proposed legislation that addresses issues on both the local and statewide level.”
The contest, which Stone has held every year since 2016, will end on Dec. 20, when all student submissions must be received by the senator’s office.
“I will choose at least one of the entries and begin the process of creating legislation to be considered by the California Senate and Assembly and, hopefully, signed by the governor,” Stone said.
Previous winners hailed from Shadow Hills High School in Indio and Rancho Mirage High School.
Stone said he will meet with the author of this year’s winning entry in January or February and invite him or her, along with a parent or guardian, to Sacramento to testify about their proposal.
The 28th Senate District encompasses all of the Coachella Valley, as well as Canyon Lake, Idyllwild, Lake Elsinore, Murrieta and Temecula.
