Organizers of the Palm Springs International Film Awards Friday recognized actress Carey Mulligan for her performance in “Promising Young Woman.”

The 35-year-old London native will receive the International Star Award, despite the festival’s in-person activities being canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Palm Springs International Film Society still plans to acknowledge this year’s most celebrated film performances.

“In ‘Promising Young Woman,’ Carey Mulligan boldly portrays Cassandra Thomas, a young woman who risks her life to avenge the death of her best friend. This is a thrilling black comedy that tells an entertaining story of female power,” Festival Chairman Harold Matzner said.

Mulligan was previously honored at the festival with the Breakthrough Performance Award in 2011.

In 2009, Mulligan received a Best Actress Academy Award nomination for her performance in the drama “An Education.” Her first role in a feature film was in “Pride & Prejudice” in 2005.

Last year’s recipient of the International Star Award, Charlize Theron, went on to receive a Best Actress Academy Award nomination for her performance in “Bombshell.”

The Palm Springs International Film Festival is set to return in 2022. The Palm Springs ShortFest is scheduled for June 22-28.
