Thunderstorms caused more than 1,000 Southern California Edison customers to lose power throughout the Coachella Valley Monday.
The power loss began in the early morning hours as thunderstorms hammered the region. SCE officials said some customers may remain without power until Tuesday morning.
The utility reported 488 customers were without power in Palm Springs as of noon, mostly in the area of Alexander Way and Via Miraleste, near Racquet Club Estates. As of 4 p.m., that number had shrunk to about 70. Those still affected in Palm Springs should see their power returned by about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the utility.
In Palm Desert, 893 customers were reported to be without electricity as of noon, mostly near Palm Desert High School, located in the area of Cook Street and Aztec Road. Those customers were expected to see their power restored by 2 a.m. Tuesday.
Power outages were also reported in Cathedral City.
It was not immediately clear how many SCE customers lost power in total.
Customers were urged to check the Southern California Edison outage map for updates, which can be found at www.sce.com/outage-center/check-outage-status.
