A full remediation plan was underway Friday after mold was found in two classrooms at John Kelley Elementary School in Thermal, according to the Coachella Valley Unified School District.
District officials revealed the mold findings Thursday and contracted a certified environmental testing firm to conduct an independent assessment.
An unspecified number of students and staff in the affected classrooms were removed and relocated to different areas within the facility to continue instruction without interruption.
Based on the firm’s findings, the district contracted a licensed environmental remediation company to clean and remove the mold. The company will follow the scope of work outline in Safeguard’s report to ensure it will be safe for students and staff can return to the classrooms.
A final remediation report will be made available to the public once the work is completed and a post-remediation verification will be conducted, officials said.
“The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. We are acting with urgency, responsibility and transparency to address this issue and ensure a safe learning environment,” district officials said in a statement.
