Metro’s historic Lankershim Depot, built in 1896, has gotten a $3.6 million makeover, but the regional transportation agency has yet to decide what to do with it.
“Metro has given the Lankershim Depot a Hollywood-style makeover,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, also Metro’s board chairman.”The depot has played a prominent role in the history of North Hollywood and will play a supporting role in its rebirth as the Valley’s preeminent transit hub.”
The station is near the Orange Busway and the Red Line light rail in North Hollywood, but Metro officials have yet to decide how to best use it.
Originally the Toluca Southern Pacific Train Depot, the made-over station retains its yellow and brown paint scheme. A restored mid-19th century sign on the roof reads “Southern Pacific-Pacific Electric Station,” recalling when the depot was primarily passenger and freight stop, Dave Sotero of Metro said.
The work was paid for with $2.5 million in Proposition C half-cent sale tax monies and $1.1 million from the city, he said.
