Mayor Eric Garcetti is set to fly to Paris Wednesday to join other local officials at COP21, an international conference where world leaders are negotiating an agreement to reduce greenhouse gas and other emissions linked to climate change.

COP21, also known as the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, began Monday and lasts until Dec. 11. Garcetti will attend the Thursday and Friday portion of the conference.

California Gov. Jerry Brown announced this week that he will attend the conference for six days starting on Friday.

Garcetti said last month he was even more determined to go to the conference following the attacks in Paris by the terrorist group ISIS that killed at least 130 people, including a Cal State Long Beach student who was studying overseas as part of an exchange program.

“Recent events have only reaffirmed my resolve and desire to stand with Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo as she hosts leaders from around the world. I am proud to join former (New York City) Mayor Michael Bloomberg and my fellow mayors for this historic summit,” he said.
