A Richard Nixon Presidential $1 Coin and Patricia Nixon First Spouse Coin were unveiled Wednesday at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum in Yorba Linda.
Nixon’s 85-year-old brother, Edward, U.S. Mint Chief Counsel Jean Gentry, and Richard Nixon Foundation President Bill Baribault were among those attending the ceremony, which was held in conjunction with a celebration of the 104th anniversary of the birth of Patricia Nixon.
The heads side of the Richard Nixon Presidential $1 Coin features a profile portrait of Nixon with the inscriptions “Richard M. Nixon,” “In God We Trust,” “37th President” and “1969-1974.”
The tails side features a rendition of the Statue of Liberty with the inscriptions “$1” and “United States of America.” The year of minting, the mint mark and “E Pluribus Unum” are incused on the coin’s edge.
The heads side was designed and sculpted by U.S. Mint sculptor-engraver Don Everhart.
The heads side of the Patricia Nixon First Spouse Coin features a portrait of her with the inscriptions “Patricia Nixon,” “In God We Trust,” “Liberty,” “37th” and “1969-1974.”
The tails side features stylized figures standing hand-in-hand surrounding a globe, symbolizing her commitment to volunteerism around the world.
Both the heads and tails sides were designed by Richard Masters. Everhart engraved the heads side and Jim Licaretz the tails side.
The Nixon coins are part of a program begun in 2007 of $1 coins bearing the likeness of each president and uncirculated 24-karat gold coins of the wife of each president. The Patricia Nixon gold coin is expected to cost around $800.
