Omar Hassaine has been elected board chair of the California Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the group announced Saturday.

CAIR is the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization. Its California board oversees four offices: Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento Valley and the San Francisco Bay area.

A computer engineer, Hassaine is a co-founder of the CAIR-San Diego office, which was launched after the 9/11 attacks. He has been active in the Muslim community for more than 35 years.

He replaces outgoing chair Safaa Ibrahim.

“I would like to thank my predecessor, Safaa Ibrahim, for her commitment and dedication to serving the community,” Hassaine said. “She played a critical role in helping move the organization forward, and I hope to continue the great work she did.”
