Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti Monday announced long- time city official Frank Bush as his pick to lead the LA Department of Building and Safety.

Bush is the second-ranking Building and Safety official, and has been with the department for 27 years. He would replace Raymond Chan, who is stepping in as Garcetti’s interim deputy mayor of economic development.

If confirmed by the City Council, Bush would be responsible for a department that handles construction permits and enforces building standards and safety codes.

Garcetti said Bush’s experience and “outstanding track record” makes him the best choice for a department in need of “a strong, effective leader who can uphold our rigorous safety standards while keeping pace with the surge of growth we’re seeing across our city.”

Bush said he was “honored” the mayor chose him to lead the department during “such a critical moment for development in Los Angeles.”

Bush got his start with the city as a building inspector, eventually being promoted to executive officer in 2014 to oversee the department’s 1,000 employees and everyday operations.
