State regulators issued an enforcement order Tuesday requiring operators of an Industry battery-recycling plant to repair a hole in the wall of a hazardous-waste containment building and seal gaps under doors to prevent any release of hazardous waste.
The state Department of Toxic Substances Control ordered Quemetco to immediately stop putting hazardous waste in the building and make the repairs within three days of the order taking effect. The order takes effect 15 days after it is delivered to the company, according to DTSC.
The department also ordered the company to submit a plan for removing all hazardous waste in the containment building. It also must submit a plan for establishing and maintaining a functioning leak-detection and liquid-collection system.
“We expect Quemetco to quickly fix these serious violations, and we will continue to monitor its operation closely,” said Keith Kihara, head of DTSC’s Enforcement Division.
Quemetco officials could not be reached for comment.
