After a special joint session, the Los Angeles City Planning Commission and the Board of Airport Commissioners Thursday both unanimously approved a comprehensive $5.5 billion plan to reduce auto traffic and congestion at Los Angeles International Airport.
The centerpiece of the plan is the construction of the Consolidated Rent- A-Car Center, a project that will conjoin more than 20 car rental offices in one location. Along with a 2.25-mile Automated People Mover, officials say the project will eliminate the need for rental car courtesy vehicles entering the central terminal area and reduce the number of autos driving in and out of LAX by 3,200 each day.
The plan — called the Landside Access Modernization Program — also includes roadway improvements to increase autos, bicycle and pedestrian access.
