If you hate clogged freeways and stop-and-go surface streets in downtown Los Angeles, you’re going to really hate this: Starting Saturday, Sixth Street between Flower and Hope streets will be shut down for five months.

And that means the Sixth Street off-ramp from the southbound Harbor (110) Freeway will also be closed for the entire five months, and the often-crowded northbound Sixth Street off-ramp will be reduced from two lanes to one.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority says the shutdowns and lane reductions are necessary for roadway removal, utility relocation and beam installation work required for the Regional Connector Transit Project.

Southbound freeway traffic will be detoured to the Fourth Street off- ramp, to Grand Avenue and then back to Sixth Street.

Northbound traffic from the Harbor Freeway off-ramp to eastbound Sixth Street will be limited to just one lane between Figueroa and Flower streets. Northbound freeway motorists are advised to use the Ninth Street off-ramp as an alternative to avoid long delays.

Eastbound Sixth Street through traffic will be detoured to southbound Bixel Street and eastbound Seventh Street to Olive Street and then back to Sixth Street. Local access will be maintained on Sixth Street from Hope Street to the AON Center, Pegasus Garage and the Standard Hotel.

Sidewalks at the intersection of Sixth and Flower will be modified, with at least three crosswalks to remain open and construction flaggers on-site to facilitate access.

Regional Connector Constructors crews will work under contract to Metro.
