Los Angeles County easily maintained its title as the most-populous county in the nation last year, according to figures released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau, while the Los Angeles/Long Beach/Anaheim region held its ranking as the second most-populous metropolitan area.
According to the Census Bureau, Los Angeles County’s population was 10,163,507 last year, a nearly 13,000-person jump from 10,150,558 in 2016.
The closest county in population to Los Angeles was Cook County, Illinois, which had a 2017 population of 5,211,263. Harris County, Texas, ranked third, followed by Maricopa County, Arizona.
San Diego County placed fifth on the list, with a population of 3,337,685.
The ranking of the top 10 most-populous counties for 2017 was unchanged from 2016. Riverside County held its 10th-place ranking, with a population of 2,423,266. Riverside County’s population increased by 36,744 people between 2016 and 2017 — the third-largest population gain of any county in the nation.
For large metropolitan areas, the Los Angeles/Long Beach/Anaheim region continued to rank second in the nation with 13,353,907 people. That was second only to New York/Newark/Jersey City, which has 20,320,876 residents last year.
