Sen. Ben Allen, D-Redondo Beach, Monday endorsed Katy Young Yaroslavsky, a climate attorney and policy adviser for L.A. County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, to represent Council District 5 in the 2022 election.

The district — which stretches from Encino to Westwood, as well as east into part of Hollywood — is currently represented by Councilman Paul Koretz, who is not running in 2022 due to term limits. Koretz’s policy advisor, Jeff Ebenstein, is also running to represent the district.

“As the chair of the Senate Environmental Quality Committee, I know how important it is to elect leaders who have the fortitude to stand up to polluters and special interests,” Allen said. “Katy Young Yaroslavsky has the proven experience — and the courage — to fight for the people and neighborhoods of the 5th District. I’m proud to endorse her for City Council, and I know Katy will bring strong representation for the 5th District constituents whom I represent.”

For the last five years, Yaroslavsky has worked as Kuehl’s senior policy director for the environment and the arts.

“Senator Ben Allen is an effective champion for environmental protection, as well as for reform and transparency in government, and I’m honored to earn his endorsement,” she said.

Yaroslavsky has also been endorsed by Kuehl, Rep. Karen Bass, and former L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, who is her father-in-law.

If elected, Yaroslavsky plans to focus on affordable housing, the homelessness crisis, climate change and systemic racism, according to her website.
