More than two years after being approved by the Los Angeles City Council, an ordinance goes into effect Wednesday banning political contributions from developers awaiting city approval for projects.
The law prevents “restricted developers” from donating to the mayor, the city attorney, a member of the City Council, a candidate or a city-controlled committee. These developers include property owners who have business with the city related to the property, including projects requiring approval or other action by city elected officials.
Developers are prohibited from donating starting the day an application for a significant planning entitlement is submitted. The ban expires a year after the city makes its final determination on the project.
The City Council voted unanimously in December 2019 to approve the law amid a federal corruption and bribery investigation of City Hall.
