State election officials have extended the nomination period for Orange County’s 47th Congressional District primary on March 5, the Orange County Registrar of Voters announced Saturday.

The nomination period has been extended until 5 p.m. Wednesday “because the eligible incumbents failed to file nomination papers by the 5 p.m. December 8, 2023 deadline,” the Registrar’s Office said.

Any qualified person, other than the incumbent, can now file the nomination papers until 5 p.m. on Dec. 13 in the office of the Registrar of Voters, 1300 S. Grand Ave., Building C, in Santa Ana.

The 47th District includes the cities of Costa Mesa, Irvine, Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and Laguna Beach.

Current Rep. Katie Porter, a Democrat, is leaving the seat at the end of her term to run for the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by the late Dianne Feinstein.

According to Ballotpedia, declared Republican candidates so far are Scott Baugh, a former state assemblyman, James Griffin, a real estate broker, businessmen Brian Burley, Long Pham and Max Ukropina, Weiming Chu, Steven Cotton and Julia Hashemieh.

The Democratic candidates are Lori Kirkland Baker, a writer and television producer, entrepreneur Andrew Goffe, social media content creator Dom Jones, state Sen. Dave Min, Boyd Roberts, Mike Schaefer, a member of the California State Board of Equalization, and community activist Joanna Weiss.

Tom McGrath, who lists no party affiliation, is also a candidate.
