More than $1 million will be awarded to numerous Coachella Valley organizations to support mental health and food services, Desert Healthcare District and Foundation announced Friday.

Board members approved allocating $1 million to five nonprofit organizations regarding a request for proposals titled “Empowering Resilient Youth and Families: Advancing Mental Health and Behavioral Health Support” during Tuesday’s meeting.

The funds will provide the nonprofit’s initiative over the next two years, officials said.

In addition, district officials said it will award a $193,145 grant to Vision y Compromiso to “expand access to mental health services for children and families in the Coachella Valley.”

The grant will be directed to the salaries of two new community health workers, a project coordinator, tablets for program delivery, wellness materials for family engagement activities, printing services and other expenses.

Alianza Nacional de Campesinas will receive a $75,000 grant “to address food insecurity within farmworker communities in the Coachella Valley that are food-deprived in the area,” officials said.

The district and foundation board will fund a total of $1,268,145.

Board members have proposed a three-year grant of $5,263,551 to decrease physician shortage in the CV, including Spanish-speaking communities in the eastern valley. It will be discussed and voted on for a later date.
