“The Martian” continued to rule the North American box office over the weekend, while a much-touted fantasy film fell flat, according to final figures released Monday.
Matt Damon’s outer-space adventure collected $37 million between Friday and Sunday to hold on to the top spot at the box office, according to Rentrak. The film has earned $108.7 million in its two weeks of release.
The animated “Hotel Transylvania 2” also continued to be a crowd- pleaser, earning another $20.4 million to push its three-week take to $116.9 million.
The biggest disappointment at the box office was easily Warner Bros.’ “Pan,” the Peter Pan fantasy film starring Hugh Jackman. The big-budget production debuted in third place with just $15.3 million.
“The Intern” took fourth place with $8.7 million, followed by “Sicario” with $7.6 million.
Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” ($5.4 million); “The Walk” ($3.7 million); “Black Mass” ($3.1 million); “Everest” ($3 million); and “The Visit” ($2.5 million).
