
With Halloween getting closer, a big-screen adaptation of the spooky book series “Goosebumps” led the way at the weekend box office, topping a trio of debut films and besting Matt Damon’s powerhouse “The Martian,” according to final figures released Monday.
“Goosebumps,” starring Jack Black, opened with $23.6 million, edging out “The Martian” to take first place, according to box-office tracker Rentrak.
“The Martian” placed second with $21.3 million, giving it a three-week total of $143.6 million.
Steven Spielberg’s political thriller “Bridge of Spies” opened in third place with $15.4 million, ahead of Universal’s ghost story “Crimson Peak,” which earned $13.1 million.
The animated “Hotel Transylvania 2” continued to attract audiences, earning $12.6 million between Friday and Sunday.
Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were “Pan” ($5.9 million); “The Intern” ($5.4 million); “Sicario” ($4.6 million); “Woodlawn” ($4 million); and “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” ($2.8 million).
