Democrat Paul Penzone was elected the new sheriff of Arizona’s Maricopa County, ending the 24-year reign of Joe Arpaio. But the self-styled “America’s toughest sheriff” won’t let go of his birther fixation.

On Thursday, he and “Cold Case Posse” member Mike Zullo spent TV time arguing that President Obama’s 1961 birth certificate was a forgery.

“Zullo repeatedly insisted that the probe was not political and that he simply wanted to ‘clear’ the president of the United States,” said USA Today, quoting Zullo as saying: “It didn’t work out that way.”

Why raise the issue after Donald Trump himself had dropped it?

One theory came from J. Weston Phippen of The Atlantic. At 84, Arpaio will be jobless.

“Arpaio praised Trump this summer at the Republican National Convention, and it even looked like he might receive a Cabinet position,” Phippen wrote Thursday. “But those spots are almost filled, and the criminal case against Arpaio is ramping up. In two weeks he will be out of a job. It was a perfect time for another birther press conference.”

“The video purported to show how the alignment of nine stampings on [two] certificates matched up, seemingly edited by ‘Photoshop, or God only knows what else,’ Zullo said. The implication was that Obama’s birth certificate had been forged using this as a model.”

Adobe Photoshop was created in 1988.

Here’s how other critics are reacting.
