Brad Pitt‘s lawyers want a judge to seal records regarding his and Angelina Jolie’s six minor children in their divorce and child custody case.
In court papers filed Wednesday, Pitt’s lawyers contend Jolie and her attorneys are risking the children’s privacy while trying to make him look bad in their filings.
Pitt’s lawyers stated in their court papers that making public the names of the children’s mental health professionals violated an agreement to protect their privacy. The attorneys accused Jolie of “attempting to clear the way to put in the public eye any allegations she can” without regard to the impact on the former couple’s children.
“(Pitt) submits that the overriding interest of the children’s welfare and their rights of privacy overcome the right of public access to information and that the children’s privacy rights support the request to seal the record,” Pitt’s lawyers state in their court papers.
The FBI and Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services both cleared Pitt in November of any wrongdoing after an allegation arose that he physically abused one of his children aboard a private jet flying to Los Angeles from Europe in September.
A hearing on Pitt’s motion is scheduled Jan. 17.
The 41-year-old Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt, 53, on Sept. 19. The pair had been together since 2004, but weren’t married until August 2014. The couple have six children: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne.
