The MTV Movie Awards aren’t just about movies anymore.
The network announced Monday it is expanding the reach of its annual awards show to include television programming. In light of the move, the name of the event was changed to the “MTV Movie & TV Awards.”
“We’re living in a golden age of content, and great storytelling and characters resonate regardless of whether you’re watching it in a theater or on TV,” MTV President Chris McCarthy said. “The new `MTV Movie & TV Awards’ will celebrate even more of the brightest, bravest, funniest and most shared film and TV shows resonating across youth culture.”
This year’s show will be held May 7 at the Shrine Auditorium. To celebrate the expanded show, MTV plans to hold a daylong “Movie & Television Festival” outside the Shrine, featuring musical acts, food and other entertainment that will end with attendees being able to watch the red-carpet arrivals for the awards show.
