Hollywood records were shattered Sunday when “Avengers: Infinity War” was estimated to sell a quarter billion dollars in tickets — the biggest North American opening weekend of all-time.
Add worldwide movie ticket sales in to the $250 million domestic total , and the latest Disney/Marvel film is on track to sell $630 million worldwide in opening weekend tickets, according to comScore analyst Paul Dergarabedian.
“This is a truly fitting debut for the latest Marvel popcorn extravaganza,” Dergarabedian gushed. It “brings together an almost unimaginable number of key characters into one giant thrill ride of a movie.”
And the Avengers did not suck all the oxygen out of the marketplace this weekend. The sleeper horror hit “A Quiet Place” was on track for a “solid” $10.7 million fourth weekend, and has earned $148.1 million through close of business Sunday evening.
Amy Schumer’s “I Feel Pretty” was in third place, and on track to $8.1 million in its second weekend sales, and $29.6 million over 10 days.
In fourth place after three weekends: Dwayne Johnson in “Rampage.” It was estimated to sell $7.2 million in its third weekend, which was good for $77.9 million after 17 days .
Another Marvel blockbuster, “Black Panther,” passed “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” this weekend to claim the number nine all-time global spot, with an estimated global total of $1.3 million. “Panther” was estimated to deal $4.4 million this weekend.
Rounding out the top 10 list of most popular movie this weekend, in the United States in Canada, as estimated by the studios and collated by comScore, were “Super Troopers 2” ($3.6 million), “Blumhouse*s Truth or Dare” ($3.2 million), “Blockers” ($2.9 million), “Ready Player One” ($2.4 million) and “*Traffik” ($1.6 million).
