Getting a Razzie Award is usually considered a bad thing in Hollywood, but that’s not always the case — thanks to the Razzie Redeemer Award.
The award recognizes a past Razzie winner or nominee who has emerged with a redeeming project to rise from the depths of Razzie dishonor.
Nominated for this year’s honor are:
— Melissa McCarthy, who is nominated for a regular Razzie this year for “Life of the Party” and “The Happytime Murders” but is also up for an Oscar for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”;
— Tyler Perry, going from a “multi-Razzie nominee” to his latest role as Colin Powell in the Oscar-nominated “Vice”;
— director Peter Farrelly, for his move from films such as “Movie 43” and “Dumb and Dumber 2” to this year’s Oscar hopeful “Green Book”;
— the “Transformers” film franchise, hailed for its transformation from a “Razzie-targeted heap of metal” to the more recent and “endearing” sequel “Bumblebee”; and
— Sony Animation Studio, for its evolution from multi-Razzie winner “The Emoji Movie” to the Oscar-nominated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”
For the first time, voting on the Razzie Redeemer Award is being opened to the public. Movie buffs can weigh in by casting ballots at www.razzies.com.
The Razzie Awards will be presented Feb. 23, the day before the Oscars.
