The new fantasy film “Monster Hunter,” based on a series of video games and starring Milla Jovovich, knocked “The Croods: A New Age” from the top spot at the box office this weekend, opening with $2.2 million, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
“The Croods: A New Age” was second with $2 million in its fourth week of release amid reduced theater capacity due to the coronavirus pandemic, Comscore reported.
The thriller “Fatale” opened with $925,000 for third place Friday through Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada.
The comedy “Half Brothers” was fourth with $260,000, followed by “The War With Grandpa” with $169,730.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “Freaky” ($165,000), “Come Play” ($110,000), “The Muppet Christmas Carol” ($92,000), “All My Life” ($70,000) and “Honest Thief” ($66,000).
Indoor movie theaters in Southern California are closed indefinitely due to the pandemic, leaving only limited outdoor screenings.
