“The Mandalorian” dominates the list of nominations heading into Tuesday evening’s virtual 19th annual Visual Effects Society Awards, carrying 13 nods into the event.
The Disney+ series’ nominations total far outdistances any other broadcast production or film, with the animated movie “Soul” being the closest challenger, with five.
Joining “Soul” in the category of best visual effects in an animated feature film are “Onward,” “Over the Moon,” “The Croods: A New Age” and “Trolls World Tour.”
Nominated for outstanding visual effects in a feature film are “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey,” “Project Power,” “Tenet,” “The Midnight Sky” and “The Witches.” For outstanding supporting visual effects in a feature film, nominations went to “Da 5 Bloods,” “Extraction,” “Mank,” “News of the World” and “Welcome to Chechnya.”
Among its nods, “The Mandalorian” is nominated for visual effects in a broadcast episode, along with episodes of “Lovecraft Country,” “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Timmy Failure” and “Westworld.”
The awards will be presented in a virtual streaming format, with Patton Oswalt hosting.
During the event, Sir Peter Jackson, the director behind the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” film trilogies, will receive the Visual Effects Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Cate Blanchett will present the honor.
The VES Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes a body of work that has significantly contributed to the art and/or science of the visual effects industry, according to the society, which said Jackson is being honored for his “consummate artistry, expansive storytelling and profound gift for blending iconic imagery and unforgettable narrative on an epic scale.”
Others set to serve as presenters include Zack Snyder, Jenna Elfman, Danny DeVito, Sacha Baron Cohen and Demian Bichir.
