The time-bending drama “Everything Everywhere All At Once” and the Irish tale of a deteriorating friendship “The Banshees of Inisherin” will look to dominate the 29th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday evening, with each carrying five nominations into the ceremony.
Both films are nominated in the top category of outstanding ensemble cast in a motion picture, the SAG equivalent of a best picture honor. Also nominated are Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical film “The Fabelmans,” “Babylon” and “Women Talking.”
Austin Butler (“Elvis”) and Colin Farrell (“Banshees”) are both nominated for the SAG Award for best actor, along with Brendan Fraser for “The Whale,” Bill Nighy for “Living” and Adam Sandler for “Hustle.”
Cate Blanchett (“Tár”) and Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All At Once”) will compete for best actress honors with Viola Davis for “The Woman King,” Ana de Armas for “Blonde” and Danielle Deadwyler for “Till.”
The SAG Awards are often considered by performers as being among the most cherished Hollywood honors, because they are voted upon and awarded exclusively by other actors. The awards are also strong predictors of who will win the performance prizes on Oscar night.
On the small screen, “Better Call Saul,” “The Crown,” “Ozark,” “Severance,” and “The White Lotus” are nominated for the SAG Award for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series.
“Abbott Elementary,” “Barry,” “The Bear,” “Hacks,” and “Only Murders in the Building” will compete for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series.
During the ceremony at the Fairmont Century Plaza hotel, Sally Field will receive a SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award, presented by her “Spider-Man” co-star, Andrew Garfield.
Also serving as presenters during the show will be Jason Bateman, Jeff Bridges, Jenna Ortega, Aubrey Plaza, Adam Scott, Zendaya, SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher, Matt Bomer, Ariana DeBose, Eugene Levy, Amy Poehler, Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain, Don Cheadle, Caleb McLaughlin, Paul Mescal, Ashley Park and SAG Awards Ambassadors Antonia Gentry and Haley Lu Richardson.
Members of the casts of each of the nominees for best ensemble cast in a motion picture will also act as presenters, introducing clips of their respective films.
The ceremony, which has traditionally been broadcast on TBS/TNT, will be streamed this year on Netflix’s YouTube channel. Beginning next year, the SAG Awards will be livestreamed on Netflix.
