“Mean Girls” opened in first place at the North American box office this weekend, taking in $28 million, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
The new version of 2004’s hit is written by Tina Fey, who wrote the original, and is based on a hit Broadway musical inspired by the 2004 film.
The Jason Statham-starring action film “The Beekeeper” opened in second place with $16.7 million, Comscore reported.
Third place went to “Wonka,” which took in another $8.3 million Friday through Sunday in its fifth week in theaters.
Fourth place went to the romantic comedy “Anyone But You,” which added another $6.9 million to its total in its fourth weekend.
The animated adventure “Migration” was fifth with $6.1 million in its fourth week.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases were “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” ($5.2 million), “Night Swim” ($4.6 million), “The Boys in the Boat” ($3.5 million), “The Book of Clarence” ($2.5 million) and “The Iron Claw” ($2.4 million).
This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $100.6 million. The year-to-date total is $301.7 million — down 7% from the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore.
