It was a big morning for HBO Max Wednesday, with reigning outstanding drama series winner “The Pitt” nominated for a leading 25 Emmy Awards, while the recently concluded “Hacks” collected 24 nods, a new record for comedy series.
“Hacks,” which completed its run May 28, has now been nominated for outstanding series in each of its five seasons, winning in 2024. The 24 overall nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards it received Wednesday topped the single-year record of 23, set by “The Bear” in 2024 and matched by “The Studio” last year.
Also nominated for outstanding comedy series were ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” HBO’s “The Bear,” Apple TV’s “Margo’s Got Money Troubles,” Netflix’s “Nobody Wants This,” Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” Apple TV’s “Shrinking” and Apple TV’s “Widow’s Bay.”
Last year’s winner, the Apple TV Hollywood satire “The Studio” did not air any new episodes during eligibility period, June 1, 2025-May 31, 2026.
Looking to unseat “The Pitt” in the drama series category will be Netflix’s “The Diplomat,” HBO’s “The Gilded Age,” HBO’s “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” Hulu’s “Paradise,” and Apple TV’s “Pluribus,” “Slow Horses,” and “Your Friends & Neighbors.”
No series from a major broadcast network has been nominated in the drama series category since the NBC family drama “This Is Us” in 2019. A series from the major broadcast networks has not won since Fox’s “24” in 2006.
Nominations for outstanding limited or anthology series went to Peacock’s “All Her Faults,” Netflix’s “The Beast in Me,” Netflix’s “Beef,” HBO’s “DTF St. Louis,” and FX/Hulu’s “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette.”
Peacock’s “The Traitors,” which was won the award for outstanding reality competition program each of the past two years, was nominated again in the category. Also scoring nominations in the category were MTV’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Bravo’s “Top Chef,” CBS’ “Survivor” and ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.”
Notably absent from the list was CBS’ “The Amazing Race,” which was previously nominated 22 times in the 23 years the category existed. It was nominated in each of the first 17 years, was not eligible in 2020 because CBS did not air a new season during the eligibility period, then nominated again each of the last four years. It is a 10-time winner, including each of the first seven.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” was nominated for the 10th consecutive year, while the nod for “Top Chef” is its 20th straight. “Survivor” is now a nine-time nominee.
Emmy-winning actors Liza Colón-Zayas and Jeff Hiller announced the nominees in the top categories Wednesday morning at the Wolf Theatre in the Television Academy’s Saban Media Center at its North Hollywood headquarters.
Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego hosted the ceremony.
The 78th annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be held Sept. 14 at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live. The bulk of the awards will be presented at the Creative Arts Emmys Sept.5-6, also at the Peacock Theater. Those awards are mainly in technical categories such as picture editing, costuming, hairstyling, makeup and sound, but also include awards for guest acting.
