A new attraction featuring a traditional ride into a cyber world of scary underwater creatures that guests can “battle” like a video game will open this spring at Knott’s Berry Farm, officials announced Thursday.
The “Voyage to the Iron Reef” attraction involves a storyline of underwater creatures roused by construction that expanded the Boardwalk Pier last year to include new attractions such as Coast Rider and Surfside Gliders.
The Queen of the Kraken and her aquatic army want to feast on the steel making up the roller coasters and other rides, so guests brave enough to confront the creatures will climb aboard a four-person “submarine-inspired” conveyance that plunges them into a four-minute video gaming adventure.
During the ride, guests will blast away the sea life as they work to rescue the theme park. There will be an element of competition, too, as guests compete with others for the highest scores.
The submarines will roll along 600 feet of track and feature 11 scenes, and the computer program “reacts to your actions, making each interactive voyage a different experience,” according to Knott’s spokeswoman Leidy Arevalo.
“The same commitment to storytelling and dedication to incorporating the most cutting-edge ride technologies that made Knott’s Bear-y Tales and Kingdom of the Dinosaurs so popular is what has driven the Iron Reef creative process,” said Raffi Kaprelyan, vice president and general manager of Knott’s Berry Farm. “The technology showcased in Iron Reef will honor the legacy of the attractions that preceded it, and propel the on-ride experience into the 21st century.”
