You may see stars in Hollywood Wednesday night.
Not film stars – real stars in the sky. That’s because a couple of power outages may not fully be fixed until about 8:30 p.m. after the sun goes down. The power outages may possibly allow the night sky to show more evening stars than would normally be visible when ambient city lights in the neighborhood obscure celestial objects.
But there were no guarantees. Power may be restored sooner than anticipated. Even if the lights remain off, other Hollywood area lights may still be strong enough to block views of the Milky Way.
A pair of power outages that occurred blocks apart left more than 1,700 Department of Water and Power customers in the Hollywood area without electricity Wednesday.
The first outage occurred around 12:40 p.m. near Santa Monica Boulevard and Sycamore Avenue, according to Albert Rodriguez of DWP. He said 719 customers were affected by the outage.
About an hour later, another outage was reported near Highland and DeLongpre avenues, affecting around 1,000 customers, he said.
Crews were working to restore power, and electricity was already back on for some customers by early afternoon. DWP officials estimated that all the repairs would be completed by that 8:30 p.m. time.
At least one of the outages was caused by metallic balloons making contact with power lines, according to the DWP.
