Los Angeles Department of Water and Power customers slashed their water use by 21 percent in July, compared with the same month in 2013, which goes further than the state mandated goal, Mayor Eric Garcetti announced Wednesday.

State officials are requiring that Los Angeles water users cut their consumption by 16 percent per month — compared with 2013 figures in corresponding months — to help address an extreme drought throughout the state.

The city must meet the state water use reduction targets each month from June until February 2016, and could incur fees otherwise.

The mayor has also set a goal of reducing water use 20 percent by 2020, with the city cutting water use more than 13 percent as of the end of June, according to Garcetti’s office.
