A pilot program to employ only two-car trains on Metro’s Blue and Expo lines on select weekends is now underway.
The program, introduced in the fall as a way of reducing wear and tear on rail cars and to allow more time for car maintenance and repair, is now permanent, according Metro.
The use of two-car trains on weekends, when there are fewer riders, helps ensure that the vehicles are “ready to operate at full capacity during the week,” according to Metro.
“Ultimately, this means fewer delays due to disabled trains during peak service hours,” the agency stated in a blog post.
Longer trains can be used, if necessary, during weekends with large events, according to Metro.
