Metro’s bike-sharing kiosks in downtown Los Angeles will accept credit card payments when they open up next Monday to walk-up customers, the transit agency announced Tuesday.

The bike-share program was launched earlier this month for monthly and annual pass holders, and will be available for single-use rentals starting Aug. 1.

In addition to the credit card payment option, Metro is offering a promotional $1.75 walk-up rate for each 30 minutes — half-off the regular rate — until Oct. 1 to generate interest in the program.

About 1,000 bicycles are placed throughout the downtown Los Angeles area at more than 60 stations. So far nearly 5,000 rides on the shared bikes have been taken since the program began on July 7, Metro officials said.

A bike share app that can be used to purchase passes and find the nearest available bicycle can be downloaded at https://bikeshare.metro.net/app .

Metro officials plan to eventually expand the bike share program to other parts of the county. The city of Santa Monica also offers its own bike share program.
