Do you know this tortoise?

Local animal control officials are seeking the owner of a large tortoise found roaming through Desert Hot Springs, but officials said the animal was not reported missing by anyone in the Coachella Valley.

The unclaimed tortoise was found Wednesday by a Desert Hot Springs resident who confined the animal to his backyard and alerted Animal Control.

The 75-pound critter, which is possibly a Sulcata or African Spurred Tortoise, was collected by an Animal Control officer and is being kept at the Coachella Valley Animal Campus in Thousand Palms, said agency spokesman John Welsh.

Anyone looking to claim the missing tortoise or who has information regarding its owner can call the shelter at (760) 343-3644.
